In the world of Hunter × Hunter, Hunters are licensed elite members capable of accessing restricted locations and tracking rare treasures or individuals. The Hunter Association runs a rigorous annual examination with a success rate of less than one in a hundred-thousand. A Hunter may be awarded up to three stars based on remarkable achievements or official positions. Nen is the ability to control life energy, classified into six types: Enhancers, Emitters, Manipulators, Transmuters, Conjurers, and Specialists. Users can enter Contracts with Limitations to strengthen abilities. Following the Chimera Ant crisis, where President Netero defeated King Meruem via suicide bomb, the Association faces a leadership vacuum. The Zodiacs (with Ging Freecss having resigned prior to the arc) seek a new chairman. This period transitions into an expedition to the forbidden Dark Continent organized by Beyond Netero, backed by the Kingdom of Kakin. Major world powers permit this under strict oversight by the Zodiacs.

In Their Own Story

After the Chimera Ant crisis, Gon is critically injured after overexerting Nen to kill Neferpitou. Killua retrieves his sister Alluka from the Zoldyck family, overcoming Illumi's interference, to heal him. Meanwhile, Ging Freecss reveals his journey's purpose is to travel to the Dark Continent. Beyond Netero organizes an expedition there, backed by the Kingdom of Kakin. The world's major powers allow this under strict oversight with Zodiac supervision. Kurapika and Leorio join the Zodiacs, replacing Ging and Pariston Hill, who form independent teams. Onboard Kakin's ship, Chrollo Lucilfer regains his Nen and battles Hisoka, who was revived and begins assassinating Phantom Troupe members. Kurapika serves as bodyguard to Prince Wobble while seeking to reclaim the stolen scarlet eyes from Prince Tserriednich.
