The clan was systematically exterminated approximately five years prior to the series start by the Phantom Troupe, who desecrated their bodies to harvest and sell the eyes on the black market. Driven by this tragedy, Kurapika entered the Hunter Exam alongside Gon Freecss, Killua Zoldyck, and Leorio Paradinight with a singular goal: to gain the resources of a Blacklist Hunter license and hunt down his people's killers. To aid his mission, he pragmatically joined the Nostrade mafia family as their head bodyguard, setting aside his morals when necessary. His rage is triggered instantly by the sight of a spider, the Troupe's symbol, transforming him from a level-headed strategist into a lethal avenger capable of killing Uvogin and temporarily forcing Chrollo Lucilfer into Zetsu using Chain Jail.

His middle finger's Chain Jail remains an unbreakable restraint specifically for the Phantom Troupe, bound by a contract where he would die if used on anyone else.
